Self-publishing can be a daunting exercise, since an author has to prepare their work for publication without a professional, supportive editorial staff. However, as worked to finalize my “It Begins in a Garden” chapbook for publication, I was fortunate to have Julia—she did the work of a full professional editorial team, helping to edit, proofread, and format the final copy of my chapbook. I had the pleasure of consulting with Julia Christianson last summer. I am a professional storyteller employed by an educational nonprofit organization. I was scheduled to be presenting a new program at a public library. This was my first time of performing at this venue. I wanted to have a good crowd turnout to attend my performance.
For many years I have known that Julia is a gifted writer and wordsmith. I contacted her to ask if she could review my marketing materials to help me successfully promote this event.
I tend to get really wordy and provide too many details. Julia skillfully edited down my long text so it still had all of the important information, but with a lot less words than I had started with. She also tweaked the arrangement of my words and added some of her own creative word choices to make the sentences flow better.
We rarely see our own errors. It is really helpful to have another set of eyes to proofread copy that I am too close to. Julia corrected all of my typos and added the right punctuation marks for better impact. She also suggested using unique type fonts and sizes to emphasize different details.
Julia is very friendly and warm, very easy to work alongside. She was swift to complete the project so that I could promptly print the color flyers and begin to promote the event.
I used the final text on the printed flyer and also posted the copy on our website and on Facebook. The library event was a great success. We packed the room with an appreciative audience!
